Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani is a noted businessman and philanthropist in Zambia. Recently Dr. Mahtani’s interview excerpt at the ‘Mast Newspaper’ was released. In this interview, Dr. Rajan Mahtani praised the recent decision made by the Zambian President. On the event of Africa Day, Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema announced that he is planning to completely abolish the death penalty law. This move was welcomed by majority considering the significant rise towards abolishing the death penalty law across the globe. Majority of the global nations as well as many in Africa have already abolished the death penalty sentence and this decision from the Zambian President was long due.
Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani, while praising the decision from the Zambian President, stated that death penalty is cruel, degrading and inhumane. Dr. Mahtani is one of the top businessman and philanthropist from Zambia with several successful businesses such as Mahtani Group of Companies and Finsbury Investments among others. He is also known for his philanthropic achievements such as Prison Fellowship Zambia and Stephen Malama Award and Scholarship. Dr. Mahtani established the Prison Fellowship Zambia several decades ago and has been able to successfully develop it into a noted Christian Outreach Program. Prison Fellowship not only works towards bringing the teachings and gospel of Jesus Christ to the prisoners of Zambia, it also works towards ensuring fundamental human rights, basic human dignity and transparent criminal justice for the inmates, ex-inmates and their families in Zambia. While working with Prison Fellowship Zambia, Dr. Rajan Mahtani had the opportunity of meeting several inmates who have transformed who have transformed themselves by dedicating towards the service of the gods. Another reason why death penalty is meaningless because the current condition of the Zambian prisons is anyways degrading with many prisoners in the maximum prisons devoid of fundamental human rights and basic human dignity. As such, it can be said that the decision made by the Zambian President is certainly in the right direction.
